BOSTON — People’s United Bank has been recognized as one of the Boston Business Journal’s (BBJ)Top Charitable Contributors in Massachusetts for the ninth consecutive year. Each year, the BBJ compiles a list of companies who made cash contributions to Massachusetts-based charities. The 2021 list includes 98 companies who donated at least $100,000 to charities last year. The BBJ notes that cash and in-kind services donations increased overall from the year before, signaling that companies stepped up to help even more amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2020, People’s United donated more than $1.77 million in cash contributions to Massachusetts-based non-profit organizations through People’s United Bank and its charitable foundations – People’s United Community Foundation and the People’s United Community Foundation of Eastern Massachusetts. In addition, bank employees contributed 1,750 volunteer hours throughout the state last year. The past three years have resulted in its charitable foundations awarding 664 grants totaling more than $4.4 million to nonprofit organizations throughout Massachusetts.
“We are proud to be recognized among so many esteemed companies in Massachusetts who have been doing their part to give back and make a difference where it is needed,” said Patrick Sullivan, Massachusetts President, People’s United Bank. “Charitable giving is an integral part of our company culture, whether it be cash donations or in-kind volunteer services. We are proud to be recognized by the BBJ for the ninth year, and even prouder be a part of the of the impact our nonprofit partners are having in the lives of those who rely on their services.”
At the onset of the COVID pandemic, People’s United’s Charitable Foundations quickly implemented a phased approach to charitable giving focusing on supporting both short and long term COVID-19 relief efforts. This new, strategic approach included expedited grants, investing in COVID relief funds, and identifying opportunities to make additional investments in communities. To ensure organizations in need had increased access to available funding, grant application deadlines were extended, program grants were converted to unrestricted general operating support, and reporting requirements were eased for overburdened grantees.
In addition to its annual community giving, our Charitable Foundations also supported five COVID-19 relief funds in Massachusetts established to rapidly respond to the emergency needs of frontline nonprofit organizations serving the region’s most vulnerable residents, including: The Boston Foundation, The Boston Resiliency Fund, The Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts, The Greater Worcester Community Foundation, and the Essex County Community Foundation.
