BRIDGEPORT, CT–  The People’s United Community Foundation announced today that it has awarded $2.2 million to organizations in its service area in 2008, and more than $275,000 during the first quarter of 2009.  To date the foundation has supported only organizations in Connecticut and New York.  “Later this year,  we will begin to fund organizations in Vermont, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine, as our acquisition of the Chittenden Corporation has provided us a meaningful presence in those states,” said Philip R. Sherringham, chairman of the People’s United Community Foundation.

The People’s United Community Foundation has three areas of focus: community development, youth development, and affordable housing.  “The goal of foundation support is to help improve the lives of people residing or working in the communities served by People’s United Bank,” said Timothy B. Hodges, associate director of the People’s United Community Foundation.

“From the Building with Books Program in Bridgeport that supports after-school learning for high school students, to the Hole in the Wall Gang in New Haven that supports seriously ill children in all Connecticut Hospitals, to the Connecticut Housing Investment Fund in Hartford that supports rebuilding urban neighborhoods, funding from the People’s United Community Foundation has touched the lives of many Connecticut residents.  We are pleased to be able to help support nonprofits statewide, especially in light of the current economy.”

For a detailed list of all organizations the People’s United Community Foundation has supported in 2008 and in the first quarter of 2009, please refer to the charts below.

Established in 2007, People’s United Community Foundation was formed to help support programs and activities that enhance the quality of life for citizens in the communities that People’s United Bank serves. With special emphasis on programs designed to promote economic self-sufficiency, education and improved conditions for low-income families and neighborhoods, the funding priorities of the Foundation include: community development, youth development, and affordable housing.
