Beardsley Brown & Bassett Marks 1st Anniversry with People's

Teams with R.C. Knox to Provide Full Array of Insurance Services

FAIRFIELD, CONN.
Just one year after becoming part of People’s Bank, Beardsley Brown & Bassett is providing a broadened range of insurance services and developing new products – and proving that blending a bank with an insurance agency really does work.

“It is inevitable that clients will want to buy all their financial services in the same place, and being part of People’s gives us access to a full range of products and services. This means we’re getting an early jump on that,” said Edward J. Cooke, C.P.C.U., former president of Beardsley Brown & Bassett who is now executive vice president of R.C. Knox & Co.

On Oct. 1, 1999, People’s purchased Beardsley Brown & Bassett and made it a division of R.C. Knox & Co., which People’s had acquired in 1997. As a division of R.C. Knox, Beardsley Brown & Bassett offers its clients one-stop access to People’s full range of financial products and additional risk management services.

According to Barbara P. Johnson, People’s senior vice president and manager of Insurance Services, “The R.C. Knox/Beardsley Brown & Bassett organization has the expertise and resources that are required to serve clients with complex needs and to help them understand their risks.”

“The agency is staffed with a full safety, engineering and loss control team, as well as a full claims management team for workers compensation and property and casualty insurance,” Cooke said.

Cooke noted that Beardsley Brown & Bassett now offers “a more comprehensive approach to financial planning with the resources of (People’s NASD-member brokerage subsidiary) People’s Securities Inc. and Olson Mobeck & Co. (People’s asset management subsidiary).”

The marriage of Beardsley Brown & Bassett and People’s Bank is a natural. Both companies were founded in Bridgeport, People’s in 1842 and Beardsley Brown & Bassett in 1884. In addition to their long traditions of stability, both companies have strong commitments to their community.

“It is a good fit in terms of our culture of community involvement, also,” Cooke said. “Mark Fries (commercial insurance producer for Beardsley Brown & Bassett), for example, is chairman of this year’s campaign for the United Way of Eastern Fairfield County, and I know People’s senior executives have led the campaigns and volunteered for the United Way for years.”

As the partnership moves into its second year, People’s Insurance Services is developing new products tailored to meet its clients’ needs. “Beardsley Brown & Bassett and R.C. Knox have longstanding relationships with carriers for all types of insurance products, and we’re currently working with several companies to develop products that will be specific to our customers’ needs,” Johnson said.

Founded in 1893, R.C. Knox is headquartered at Goodwin Square in Hartford. Now ranked the 71st largest agency in the U.S. by Business Insurance, R.C. Knox is known throughout the Northeast for its expertise in commercial and personal property and casualty insurance, life, health and employee benefits, as well as bonding, risk management and pension services.
