People's Expands Homeownership Possibilites

Enhanced program in Bridgeport includes more local businesses

BRIDGEPORT, CONN. –
People’s Bank today announced it is expanding its Central Cities homeownership program to make the dream of owning a home more affordable for more people within the City of Bridgeport. The “Park City” mortgage program is a partnership with the City of Bridgeport and participating employers SNET, United Illuminating and St. Vincent’s Medical Center that provides discounted fees and many free banking services to homebuyers. Today Lacey Manufacturing Company, Inc., BHC Company and Bridgeport Hospital have joined the partnership.

“This program demonstrates how People’s continues to build on its heritage of community commitment,” said People’s President and Chief Executive Officer John A. Klein. “We’re delighted to partner with the city and with these outstanding local companies to help more people fulfill their dream of homeownership here in Bridgeport.”

People’s “Park City” mortgage program was originally launched in 1996 with the City of Bridgeport and statewide participating employers SNET and United Illuminating. St. Vincent’s joined the program in December last year. People’s operates similar programs in partnership with all 11 HUD-designated Central Cities in Connecticut. To date, the Bridgeport program has helped 100 employees purchase homes in the City of Bridgeport.

“Building homeownership is an essential part of Bridgeport’s success. We want to make sure we keep our quality people right here where they belong – in the City of Bridgeport. What better way to do this than through this program?” said Bridgeport Mayor Joseph P. Ganim.

Carol Anderson, a city employee for 21 years, has rented her home her entire adult life. When she learned about People’s “Park City” mortgage program, she knew it was her opportunity to fulfill a life-long dream. Anderson is now the proud owner of a home in Bridgeport’s north end.

“I was born here. Bridgeport has always been my home, but now living in a home I own makes it even more meaningful to me,” said Anderson. “It makes me feel very proud to see all the good things that are happening in Bridgeport and know I’m a part of all of it.”

Employees may purchase or refinance one- to four-family homes and approved condominiums within the City of Bridgeport, as long as the homes are primary residences. Participants in the “Park City” program are eligible to receive a half-point off the commitment fee, a waiver of application and documentation fees, free People’s Plus, or e.Plus checking, fee-free People’s credit cards, free personalized retirement plan counseling and free life insurance policy evaluation and coverage consultation.

“Since launching programs targeted at Connecticut’s central cities in April of 1994, our partnerships have helped nearly 700 families purchase or refinance homes. This represents approximately $70 million in financing for our urban centers,” said Waldo Emerson Williams, vice president, manager of the Residential Affordable Lending Group at People’s.

“Expanding this effort in partnership with the City of Bridgeport and continuing to provide cities with affordable access to capital is important to maintaining a healthy Connecticut,” said Dorothea Brennan, senior vice president, Residential Lending, at People’s.

Employees of Bridgeport’s “Park City” partners may call People’s Call Center at 338-0100 or visit a local branch to examine the mortgage product best for them. People’s Bridgeport branches are located at 1450 Barnum Avenue, 58 Boston Avenue, 850 Main Street, 4551 Main Street in the Brookside Shopping Center, 1080 Madison Avenue, 1728 Park Avenue and inside the Super Stop & Shop at 1089 Madison Avenue.
